Hugh Simpson (Contractors) Ltd. dismantled and removed a lighting tower from Wick Harbour Commercial quay.
The lighting tower was over 30 m high, which required our operatives to work at considerable heights. The tower was cut in 4 sections, each approximately 8-9 m long. Once on the ground each section was downsized to a size suitable for safe transportation.

Our approach

• Mobile cranes were positioned and set up. The booms were set to the desired lengths. An exclusion area was created and coordinated with Wick Harbour and other companies working in the vicinity.
• Lift supervisor carried out a toolbox talk with all involved personnel and directed all personnel to their required positions.
• Access to attach the lifting gear/ chains and to cut the steel of the tower structure was provided from a man basket attached to a 65 T crane.
• Once the chains were connected the operatives cut the steel by using gas cutting equipment, and the 350 T crane lifted each section onto the quay for further downsizing.
• The dismantled tower was removed to a temporary storage site.

Ian Cormack, the deputy harbour master, said: ” Contract was carried out efficiently, safely and with minimum effect on other stakeholders. All materials removed from site and made safe within 24 hours.”
